Cupping in Galston, NSW
Cupping therapy is a time-tested manual therapy technique that uses suction to lift and decompress soft tissue, increase circulation, and release deep-seated muscle tension. At Motiv Health in Galston, cupping is performed by both Harriette Fraser (chiropractor) and Danielle Ross (remedial massage therapist) as part of a personalised treatment plan.
Whether you are dealing with persistent muscle tightness, recovering from an injury, or simply finding that other treatments have not provided lasting relief, cupping can be a highly effective addition to your care.
What Is Cupping?
Cupping involves placing cups on the skin and creating a vacuum or suction effect that draws the underlying tissue upward into the cup. This negative pressure decompresses the layers of muscle and fascia, increases local blood flow, and helps release adhesions and tension that can be difficult to reach with conventional massage techniques.
At Motiv Health we offer both static cupping and dynamic cupping, and the approach used will always be selected based on your individual needs and presentation.
Static Cupping vs Dynamic Cupping
Static Cupping
In static cupping, cups are placed on specific areas of the body and left in position for a set period of time, typically between five and fifteen minutes. This technique is particularly effective for deep, localised muscle tension and trigger points that need sustained decompression to release. Static cupping is well suited to areas like the upper back, lower back, and shoulders where chronic tightness tends to accumulate.
Dynamic Cupping
In dynamic cupping, a small amount of oil is applied to the skin and the cup is moved across the surface of the body in a gliding motion. This technique combines the decompression effect of cupping with the therapeutic benefits of massage, making it excellent for broader areas of tension, fascial restriction, and post-exercise recovery. It is particularly effective along the back, the IT band, the hamstrings, and the calves.

What Does Cupping Feel Like?
Most people find cupping to be surprisingly comfortable and deeply relaxing. The suction sensation is unfamiliar at first but is not painful. You may feel a pulling or tight sensation in the area being treated, particularly with static cupping over areas of significant tension.
It is completely normal to experience some temporary redness or circular marks on the skin after cupping. These are not bruises — they are caused by blood and fluid being drawn to the surface of the skin and typically fade within a few days. The darker the mark, the more stagnation or tension was present in that area.
Is Cupping Safe?
Yes. Cupping has an excellent safety record when performed by trained practitioners. At Motiv Health we assess whether cupping is appropriate for your situation before using it and will always explain what to expect before your treatment begins.
There are some contraindications to cupping, including certain skin conditions, bleeding disorders, and areas over bony prominences or inflamed tissue, and we screen for all of these as part of your assessment.
Cupping as Part of Your Treatment Plan
Cupping works best when it is part of a broader treatment approach rather than used in isolation. At Motiv Health it is commonly combined with chiropractic adjustments, remedial massage, and dry needling to address both the structural and soft tissue components of your condition. This integrated approach typically produces faster and more lasting results than any single technique alone.
